The Video Platform Offers Users Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a fresh option that allows them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is classified as low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people like content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network identified as AI-generated. In total, over 100 m videos are added to the service daily, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be capable of limit or boost the volume of artificial media they see by opening the topic control option in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the tool cover politics, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules oblige creators to label lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the app will henceforth apply an AI-generated label to content created with its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is designed to stop users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also launching a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and groups to create learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, following controversy over proposals to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. TikTok is set to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by people. The platform reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
