Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
